Chapter Twenty

Kaiya

Every morning, we were up with the sun. The first two days, any semblance of control was missing. I blacked out on three different occasions. By the morning of the third day, I was getting discouraged.

"You're not focusing, Princess. What has you so distracted?”

I was this close to throwing something at him. "Oh, I don't know, maybe the fact that I keep blacking out?"

I was startled when he closed the distance between us in the blink of an eye."How did...? Right. Abilities I know nothing about. Never mind."

His hands gently cupped my face and I found myself staring into his eyes. "Maddox?"

"You've convinced yourself you can't do it. Let go of the negativity, Kaiya. You can do this. Close your eyes."

I hesitated before doing as he said.

"Now, think about the day I came to you in New Orleans, when you were trying to see just how much rain it would take to bring the city to its knees again. Think about how it felt to harness the storm, to control it, to guide it."

I listened to his voice. I thought about that day and the way it had felt — the way that I had felt. The power coursed through me, humming and making every nerve ending feel like it was alive.

Wind slowly built and then it began to rage around us. I could feel sand biting into my flesh even when Maddox moved to stand behind me.

"Open your eyes."

My eyes popped open and I stared. Withered trees were uprooted and tossed around in the maelstrom I'd created.

"What was that you were saying, Princess?"

I grinned and I was sure it light up my entire face. I was doing it. I slowly let go of the wind and it died down. I felt weak but not like I was going to pass out.

"Better?"

"Much. Thank you."

"My pleasure, sweetheart. Let's take a break, eat something, and then you can impress me with what else you can do."

I arched a brow but said nothing. How he knew air wasn't the only element I could control was a secret I had a feeling he wouldn't divulge.

"If I didn't know any better, Commander, I would think you were enjoying this."

"Oh, I am."

His smirk did things to me that I tried to ignore.

We sat in the slight shade the tent provided and I wiped my brow. "You know, I'm a little disappointed. You said the Barrens could be deadly but so far, other than the erratic weather and depressing landscape, I haven't seen anything dangerous."

Maddox groaned and I looked over at him. "What?"

"You just had to do it, didn't you?"

"Do what?"

"Hex us."

I frowned. "What?"

"You had to go and invite danger. You couldn't be content, could you?"

I started to argue but the words died in my throat as the ground began to vibrate beneath us. "What is that?"

"Thanus Wyrm. Fuck!"

Again, he seemed to move in the blink of an eye. I suddenly found myself standing on a large, flat rock with the hellhounds at my side. The mounts, which were hobbled so they wouldn't wander off, pawed at the ground and I held my breath.
